What is Jump Start College?

The Jump Start College program is a dual-enrollment opportunity for students in selected Nevada high schools. Students enroll in college courses through Western Nevada College while simultaneously earning high school credits. Jump Start College participants are able to complete up to 60 college credits through WNC.

Eligibility Requirements

Students who have passed Algebra II with a B grade or better may be considered. They will complete the college Accuplacer essay test and those who test into English 101 will be eligible to apply for the "Jump Start College" program.

Program Expectations

Jump Start students will complete their degree requirements for English and mathematics, as well as several other area, depending on the participating high school. Check with your high school counselor for the list of classes offered.

Jump Start Admissions Process

  • Step 1: Inquire with your high school counselor/administrator for eligibility.
  • Step 2: Complete high school Algebra II (or higher) with a qualifying grade.
    • Check with your high school to determine the qualifying Algebra II (or higher) grade. WNC accepts "C" of better.
  • Step 3: Take an English Accuplacer administered through WNC.
    • Must receive a score of "5" or better.
  • Step 4: Apply for WNC admissions.
  • Step 5: Attend a parent information night.
  • Step 6: Submit the Jump Start College application.
  • Step 7: Complete an interview with WNC.
  • Step 8: Register for term courses.

Supported Cohorts

Jump Start College participants are offered the opportunity to enroll in supported cohort courses where a teaching assistant is provided by the college. Teaching assistants serve as academic mentors and coaches for the students during their undergraduate experience.
