Carson City, Douglas County and Washoe County Citizens Emergency Response Teams (CERT) gathered in October for their second annual “rodeo.”

The Carson City CERT team, comprised of Western Nevada College employees, won the competition with a close victory over the South Washoe team.

In this case, a “rodeo” is a competition featuring realistic emergency scenarios, such as search and rescue and triage, as well as team-building. All events were officiated by professional emergency responders.

Barbara Ford, a member of the Carson City CERT management team and a WNC Human Resources Department employee, said that ongoing training contributed to her team’s success.

“What a great year for Carson City CERT,” Ford said. “Thanks to Carson City’s Deputy Emergency Manager Stacey Belt, CERT’s Connie Laderman and support from the Carson City Fire Department members, trainings have been frequent, interactive and valuable. This enhanced training has the CERT team members more ready than ever to step up to the plate when needed.”

Belt, who supervised the Carson City CERT team, said that the Carson City Fire Department and Emergency Management are really proud of the Carson City CERT team for winning the 2015 CERT Rodeo.

“The Carson City team demonstrated incredible ability to apply the skills they’ve been taught in medical triage, damage assessment and personal preparedness, to name a few, to bring home the trophy to Carson City,” Belt said. “They’re an asset to the community.”

CERT team member Brian Crowe, Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator at WNC, attributed the win to teamwork.

“This year, we worked better as a team and were more focused,” Crowe said. “We have the support of Carson City Fire Chief Robert Schreihans and all of his staff. What we need now is more volunteers for a second competitive team. The rodeo concept is a great motivator to keep our skills sharp.”

Retired WNC employee Judy Larquier led the team-building exercise for victorious Carson City CERT. The South Washoe team was led by Western Nevada College employee Lorraine Manatt.
