PTK Honor Society Leads Winter Care Pack Drive for Needy

Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Upsilon Beta Chapter at Western Nevada College is orchestrating an effort to make the winter months warmer for less fortunate residents in Carson City.

Through donations of nonperishable food items, winter clothing, backpacks, sleeping bags, noninflatable mats and small gifts, the PTK honor society made enough collections to fill 15 winter care packs for the needy for the holiday season. Volunteers packed and assembled care packs on campus, and distributions were made on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Mills Park.

“As students in Phi Theta Kappa, we really wanted to get ourselves out there and be known for wanting to take a stand as representatives for WNC and get involved with our community,” said Nikki Kull, a public relations officer for PTK. “We want to do something that shows we are paying attention to what's happening around us and use some of our strengths to give back.”

PTK members plan to make additional presentations of winter care packs to the needy prior to Christmas. Backpack donations are needed. Contact PTK’s Kull at nikkykull6@gmail.com or president Michael Atkinson at doc.atkinson@yahoo.com.

“We want to get them to the people that truly need warmth and some support during the holidays, mostly because some people are not fortunate to have a place to go, family or friends to lean on,” Kull said.

PTK, which is an international honor society for two-year colleges, is partnering with the Associated Students of Western Nevada, Alliance of Latin American Students, American Sign Language Club, National Student Nursing Association and the WNC Student Veterans Club for this event.

After the holidays, Kull said that the clubs will return collection bins to campus to continue helping the homeless and those living in community shelters.

“We hope to raise awareness to our growing student population at WNC that hunger and homeless is a reality and people need help all around us,” Kull said. “Furthermore, any kind of volunteer work really makes a difference. Any kind of help is needed and appreciated.”
