Construction Classes Do More Than FISHing

They don’t need a sign reading “Gone FISHing” when they aren’t in their Construction Management classrooms this fall.

Since last spring, Western Nevada College Construction instructors Nigel Harrison and Robert Ford and their students have been assisting in the remodel of Friends In Service Helping (FISH) thrift storefront in downtown Carson City. But their interaction with the community has gone further.

Ford and students have constructed stage sets for Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s productions of “Music Man” and “Mary Poppins.”

Meanwhile, Harrison speaks to students enrolled in the STEAM class, Habits of Mindcraft, on Saturdays at Carson City Library. The new workshop-based program teaches students in sixth through 10th grades about Science, Technology, Engineer, Art and Math.

Harrison said that he and his students plan to assist in completing exterior work at FISH as time and personnel permit.
