Organizational Meeting October 22

New Business Group Forming at WNC

Networking, professional growth and educational activities are among the benefits of joining Western Nevada College’s new ‘Business Association’ that is forming, and has scheduled an organizational meeting for 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in Room 314 of the Cedar Building, to establish charter members.

The association is open to all WNC students who are interested in any area of business, as well as WNC alumni and community members.

WNC Business Professor Robert Whitcomb will direct the group and plans to emphasize a variety of educational experiences.

“We are creating the group to provide an extra/co-curricular place to extend and apply student learning outside the classroom," Whitcomb said. “Through the Business Association, we will create project teams, internships, job shadowing and mentoring opportunities.”

Whitcomb said the association will generate opportunities for students and support community needs.

“I get calls all the time asking for students to work on projects, participate in internships and the like,” he said. “Through the Business Association, we will have a talent pool to assist in these community projects.

“For students who are just starting to look toward a career, we hope to provide job shadowing and mentoring opportunities. We know that internships often turn into job offers, so we’re helping students apply their learning to obtain employment.”

Group members will also gain some of the skills necessary for employment after graduation, including entrepreneurship, resume writing, interviewing skills and networking.

“Through our partnership with the Adams Hub, we will be offering a certificate in entrepreneurship,” Whitcomb said. “We will also be identifying other professional certifications and designations that employers recognize as valid employment credentials, such as PHR (Professional in Human Resources), American Marketing Association certification and CCP (Certified Compensation Professional).”

Those who are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in joining the association may contact Professor Whitcomb at Robert.Whitcomb@wnc.edu.
