The effort, dedication and commitment of Western Nevada College employees were recognized during the annual Welcome Back staff meeting on August 26. Valerie Andersen, Lupe Ramirez and Julie Lewis deWitt were named Outstanding Employees for the 2014-15 academic year.

In addition, the President’s Team award was presented to the employees who have worked on the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant, and those who are implementing the 15 to Finish program. Better known as TAACCCT, the federal grant provides WNC with $4.4 million to increase job training opportunities through 2018.

15 to Finish encourages students to take a full course load of 15 course units each semester so they can graduate with an associate degree in two years.

Andersen, the college’s Public Services Librarian since 1984, was named the Outstanding Academic Faculty Member of the Year. She has developed many programs to provide new services for students, embracing and encouraging the use of new learning technologies at the college.

She has been active in many college initiatives, leading the college recycling program and annual Earth Week activities, helping to present Multicultural Festivals on campus, bringing environmental films to campus, and helping to bring the recent Carson City International Film Festival to include WNC as a venue.

“I am extremely honored and touched to have been chosen,” Andersen said. “There are so many wonderful, hard-working, and deserving people who work here! I am inspired every day by the things you do and have loved being a part of this community.”

Ramirez, who fills dual roles as Assistant to the Dean of Student Services, and Coordinator of Latino Student Outreach, earned the Administrative Employee of the Year Award. She expressed gratitude to be part of a large team of employees that serves the community.

“I have always felt very fortunate to form part of the college community,” she said. “I am so thankful for the education I have received from this institution. Thanks to our exceptional faculty, I have gained the knowledge and skills necessary to serve the needs of many communities.”

During the 2014-15 academic year, Ramirez took on added responsibilities with the launch of the Jump Start early college academic program.

“Seeing the excitement of our future leaders when they found they qualified to take college-level courses really touched my heart,” she said.

Lewis deWitt, who works in Admissions and Records, was presented with the Classified Employee of the Year Award.

“It sure is warm and fuzzy to be acknowledged by all the great people I work with, and to think of all the great people who have come and gone through here,” Lewis deWitt said. “You have all taught me so much about how to serve our students well. I'm still learning from all of you.”
