Olga Gomez left a lasting impression on Western Nevada College. The petite and smiling young woman worked diligently every day at her classes and her student job, even when she was privately fighting a painful disease.

The college’s Latino Cohort, a group of students who study with and support each other along their college journey, was notably fond of Olga. When Gomez passed away in June after a long illness, the Latino Cohort members showed their support for Gomez and her family on Wednesday, July 15, during a service at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community in Carson City.

Cohort members wore specially made T-shirts that included Gomez’s picture above the message “Olga, you touched many lives at WNC” on the front and “You were an inspiration to us” on the back.

“Even though she was so sick, she always had a smile on her face and was always making people laugh,” said Lupe Ramirez, WNC’s assistant to the Dean and Coordinator of Latino Student Outreach. “It didn’t matter how much pain she was in, she was always making people’s day and would always have something positive to say.”

Gomez was only one class shy of earning her associate degree.

“She had the determination to push as far as she could to get her degree,” Ramirez said. “She was an inspiration.”

Ramirez said the friendship and bond of the cohort members extended beyond the campus.

“They not only support cohort members when there is a crisis, but they treat each other like family,” Ramirez said.
