Western Nevada College has recognized five outstanding contributors to the college as faculty emeriti.

Receiving the distinction this year are Katie Durbin, Western Nevada State Peace Officer Academy Commander; Dr. Doris Dwyer, History Professor; Dr. John Yurtinus, History Professor; David Rollings, Director of Facilities Planning and Development; and Nursing Professor Sherry Neil-Urban.

Dwyer taught history at WNC since 1980, receiving the Board of Regents Teaching Award in 2004-05 and various other instructor, president’s and academic faculty awards.

Durbin joined WNC in 1992, starting as an assistant for the prison program and later becoming a Criminal Justice instructor. In 1997, Durbin became commander of the Western Nevada State Peace Officer Academy, a position she held until retiring last year.

Yurtinus was named Teacher of the Year several times; the late Dr. Neil-Urban served as a nursing professor at WNC from 2003 to 2014. Her teaching touched the lives of more than 400 nursing students in the Associate Degree Nursing Program. She prepared students in multiple academic areas, from foundational courses and laboratory experiences to advanced clinical theory.

Neil Urban’s husband received a posthumous award in Sherry’s honor at the college Nursing Pinning Ceremony on May 18.

Rollings began his career at WNC in 1998 and guided the college through multiple solar energy array projects to help the college fulfill its commitment to green energy and sustainability.

The newly appointed faculty emeritus honorees were recognized by WNC President Chester Burton for their years of service to students, faculty and staff and presented with plaques prior to commencement ceremonies on Monday, May 18.

To be considered for emeritus status, the candidate must be a WNC faculty member for at least 10 years, served in academic or administrative positions and have a distinguished history of service to WNC.
