Annual Event at Governor's Mansion

Outstanding Students, Faculty Earn Accolades

Western Nevada College students and faculty were among those recognized for their achievements during the 14th annual Appreciation and Awards Banquet on April 18 at the Governor’s Mansion.

Awards were presented to students for academic excellence, as well as for their success in the new Jump Start program, athletics, clubs, government and the Latino Cohort. Faculty members were also honored for outstanding teaching and service during the 2014-15 school year.

Nevada Regent Allison Stephens delivered the keynote address during the ceremony presented by the Associated Students of Western Nevada.

Robyn Openshaw received the Regent Scholar Award and Emily Howarth was presented with the Regent Teachers Award.

Other academic awards were earned by Edward Stahi and Nathanael Denny, liberal arts; Claudia Cervantes, Kim Deroches; Leslie Shaw, science, math and engineering; Bethany Hinchliffe and Keana Grover, nursing and allied health; Crista Cota, accounting; Alex Garic and Michael Gaskins, automotive; and Nicole Rinasz, deaf studies.

Gemma Ramirez received the Latino Cohort Members Award, while Rick Vlach was presented with the Outstanding Veterans Award. The Outstanding Club went to the American Sign Language Club.

Receiving the inaugural Jump Start awards were Johnathan Canales, Silver Stage High School; Desyrae Coleman, Aspire High School; Nicolas Wong, Fernley High School; Kaylee Turner, Dayton High School; Kaitlyn Beauregard, Churchill County High School and Hugh Fonzo, Virginia City High School.

Outstanding service awards were presented to Dr. Doris Dwyer and Shannon Archer, Faculty of the Tear; Shantel Cox, Student Employee of the Year; Rebecca Martinez and J.W. Lazzari, ASWN Service Award; and Shelly Bale, Curtis Blackwell Service Award
