Softball Team's Glow Run A Success

Western Nevada College’s softball team got glowing results from its annual early evening 5K Glow Run in Carson City Saturday. After adding some after-dinner entertainment to increase the number of participants, the Wildcat Glow Run on Saturday, March 21 attracted more than 100 participants to help raise approximately $5,00 for the softball program.

“It was our best turnout; the theme helped,” said WNC softball coach Leah Wentworth. “Thanks to El Charro Avitia for donating the food. It has added incentive for people to come.”

Participants were treated to an evening run, complete with a glow stick as well as a DJ and dancing.

In the run, Konnor VanWorth of Carson City was the top finisher, completing the 5K in 18 minutes and 38 seconds. Angel Andraca of Carson City was second in 20:03 and EJ Maldonado of Carson City placed third in 21:03.

Larae Polson of Carson City was the No. 1 female finisher and fifth overall at 24:27. Shelley Plout of Carson City was next at 26:40 and Mary Jane Cartier of Carson City was third in 27:05.

Wentworth said 89 people preregistered for the event and 37 registered the day of the run. The seventh-year coach said that teaming up with Kaia F.I.T. has created more awareness of the event, and the team’s mentorship program also contributed more interest. One of those mentors, Ann Scott, coordinates Carson City’s annual Turkey Trot, so her expertise and running contacts helped expand the event, Wentworth said.

“Each year this event has gotten better. That was our vision, to continue to grow the number of runners each year,” Wentworth said.
