Workshops on Tap to Help Students Apply

Paid Research Opportunity Available

Western Nevada College students have an opportunity to spend this coming summer as a paid researcher.

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Programs to Simulate Competitive Research, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program provides students of the Nevada System of Higher Education with an opportunity to assist with the study of solar energy and its affects on water resources and the environment, while earning $4,500. Specifically, students with an academic emphasis in science, technology, engineering or mathematics are encouraged to apply.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” said Mike Sady, a WNC professor emeritus of chemistry, and an adviser for the NHSE-NSF research project.

Full-time undergraduate students with at least a 3.0 grade-point average at any NHSE institution are eligible. Of special interest are students studying in fields related to solar energy, water and/or environmental research, including biology, civil and environmental engineering, climatology, computer science, ecology, education, environmental studies, geography, hydrology, journalism, natural resources and political science.

Students are invited to attend free application writing workshops to help them complete the UROP application and proposal process, scheduled on Friday, Jan. 30, and Friday, Feb. 6, in room 104 of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center at the University of Nevada, Reno. Students are advised to attend both workshops, which run from 3 to 5 p.m.

The students will have a sense of the research experience as a team player,” Sady said. “Science is constantly changing, through exciting fields from particle physics to answering questions about our changing climate. Both are topics that look toward the future.”

The deadline for students to apply is Friday, March 6. Selected students work with a selected mentor to develop a research project.. To learn about the expectations for this proposal and other details, go to http://epscorspo.nevada.edu/solicitations-2.
