College Employees Increase Donations to Scholarships, Programs

Western Nevada College employees showed their commitment to the students they serve by participating in the 2014 Employee Giving campaign, themed “We’ve Got the Giving Spirit.” The campaign aimed to increase the number of employees who make contributions to the WNC Foundation, while thanking those who have made that commitment back to the college, its programs and its students.

“WNC employees not only work here but truly believe in our mission to inspire success in the community through educational opportunities,” said Katie Leao, WNC’s director of development.

“There is a deliberate process involved in each pledge, whether it's to support an existing program or scholarship, or to create a new project that the community will get behind and support as well.”
During the campaign, a series of weekly events honored employees who have contributed to the Foundation. Among the activities were unique fundraising opportunities, which offered employees a small reward for their donations. The activities included a dunk tank for the college president and vice presidents, the opportunity to purchase premium WNC logo gear, morning coffee deliveries by the president, and other spirit building activities.
Several employees shared what it means to them to contribute to the futures of WNC students.

"I’m proud to be an employee donor at WNC,” said Coral Lopez. “The Employee Campaign has not only acknowledged my investment, they have also made me feel really proud of the initiatives that I support.”

"I understand the value of a strong education in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields,” said Beth Blankenship. “I believe it is an important field for our country as a whole. For this reason, I am proud to support WNC's STEM Program Development and Scholarships fund!"

“Everyone gives for a specific reason, but for me, I donate to Wildcats Softball,” said Jamie McNinch.
“I have seen how involvement in athletics has built leadership skills and confidence in my daughters, and I want other young women to have access to the same opportunity.”

More than 30 employees have created a scholarship in their names or donate to the college’s general scholarship fund for Carson, Douglas and Fallon students. In total, 51% of employees contributed $29,900 for WNC programs or scholarships. The campaign had a 12% increase in total funds raised from the previous year.

The campaign officially ended on October 1, but employees can continue to invest in programs and scholarships for students attending Western.
