Identify Majors and Career Paths

Free Career Finder Tool Helps Students

Uncertain about your major or career path? Exhale. Help is on the way.

Western Nevada College has launched a new online career guidance tool to assist students with some of the most important decisions in their lives. The tool, named “Career Finder,” is on the Counseling Services page on the WNC website, or click the link

The System Interactive Guidance Information (SIGI) software created by Educational Technical Service assists students in deciding on a major and generating a list of occupations based on a survey of their values, personality, interests and work skills. It’s also available to faculty and staff.

The helpful career and educational planning tool removes the guesswork and frustration students can experience as they try to decide on a career path. Students will be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses and be able to explore a range of options based on their personal choices.

“Career/major indecisiveness is a significant factor in students not graduating. It is hard to keep working toward a goal if you are not sure what the goal is,” said Deborah Case, WNC’s director of Counseling Services.

Case has seen the educational tool in action and came away impressed.

“It is very user-friendly and robust in terms of the occupational information that is available,” said Case. Information is updated annually from data produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Students who have used the tool reported that it was fun and easy to use and that they felt the occupations that came up as a result of their personality/values/skills assessments were a good match for them.”

The easy-to-use program is only available to WNC students, faculty and staff.

“They will need to use their online credentials to sign in,” Case said.

There’s also a program that accommodates military veterans. They can soon access the “Veteran's Crosswalk” program, which connects their former military occupation with related civilian occupations.
