College Plans Veterans Resource Center at Fallon Campus

Building upon the successful Veterans Resource Center on its Carson City campus, Western Nevada College plans to add a similar service for its Fallon campus.

WNC plans to use a small portion of a $4.4 million federal grant that is primarily earmarked for job-driven training to set up a Veterans Resource Center in an existing building on the Fallon campus. The center will allow the college to address the needs of a significant number of veterans in the area.

“We’re going to make it happen,” said Kevin Burns, Veterans Resource Center supervisor. “This is an underserved area of the student population” that will be better served through the new grant.

Burns and former Student Veterans Club President Tim Galluzi will train a student veteran worker to assist veterans Monday through Thursday at the Fallon center.

“We’ll have a presence over there every day,” said Burns, noting that veterans on the Fallon campus previously had to get their answers and information through phone calls to the Carson City center. Soon, “they’ll get a person they can talk to face to face.”

Burns hopes the new center can be operating by the start of the spring semester.

The Carson City center provides veterans with access to VA Benefit information, counseling services, tutoring and mentorship, a study room with Internet access, and a place for veterans to relax and interact with other vets.
