WNC to Host Nevada Lightning on Sunday

Wildcats Softball Builds on Chemistry During Fall Season

If its fall season portends what lies ahead, then Western Nevada College’s spring softball season should be teeming with excitement.

As their fall scrimmage schedule winds down, the Wildcats have demonstrated that they are a program on the rise, winning the past seven games. That winning streak has included series sweeps of Shasta College, Feather River College and the Nevada Stealth U-18 club.

Moreover, the Wildcats have developed team unity during a long road trip to Tooele, Utah, as well as through cross-training activities such as Redrun II, in which they participated in last weekend as part of the Zombie Manifestival in Virginia City. Players were required to complete a 6-plus-mile obstacle course.

“They’ve shown a lot of team chemistry from the beginning,” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth. “We’re trying to do what we can on our end to continue to enhance that chemistry. It’s a long season. It breaks up the monotony of softball all day, every day.”

Fans have one final chance to see the team in action at Edmonds Sports Complex. The Wildcats are scheduled to meet the Nevada Lightning in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Wildcats’ fall schedule concludes with a visit to College of the Siskiyous on Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26 in Weed, Calif. A wildfire devastated Weed last month, destroying more than 150 homes as well as a school and two churches, so Wentworth is unsure if those games will go on as planned.

The two-month fall season has given the Wildcats coaching staff a chance to closely monitor the development of a 25-player roster. The season begins February 27 at home.
