Donation Leads to National Media Coverage

WNC Student Veterans' Good Deed Goes Viral

Sometimes, good deeds really do get noticed.

The Student Veterans Club of Western Nevada College brought national attention to the college in July when the club presented $1,000 to a 101-year-old veteran who was robbed on Memorial Day weekend.

The story of the students’ generosity toward James Sorrentino went viral. In addition to being covered in print, TV and online media in Reno, Carson City, Elko and Henderson in Nevada, it was picked up by more than a dozen other media outlets. They included ABC News; Fox News; the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, Minn.; 7News Denver; WBFF Fox Baltimore; and the Marine Corps Times.

The club raised the money through a Dogs of War Poker Run held on July 12 in conjunction with Ed’s Dog House and the Spoke Bar and Grill.

Congratulations, WNC student vets!
