Wildcats Capture Win Over Preseason No. 10 Cochise

Western Nevada College evened the score against preseason No. 10 Cochise College Friday afternoon, dominating the Apaches 9-2 in the second of a three-game series. WNC, ranked 14th in the NJCAA preseason poll, pounded 15 hits while holding Cochise to just two on a windy desert afternoon, after falling in the opener Thursday.

“There was a little residual sting from yesterday’s game,” said WNC Coach DJ Whittemore. “It was a great bounce-back win.”

Starting pitcher Christian Stolo earned the win with five innings of solid play. He struck out five and walked three, allowing only two runs on two hits.

“They played great defense and threw strikes,” Whittemore said of his team, which played an error-free contest. “They delivered with a perfect attitude and approach to the game.”

Three Wildcats were especially hot at the plate. Conor Harber hit 3 of 4, including two RBI, Alex Fife hit 3 of 5 with two RBI, and Jake Bennett hit 3 of 4, scoring twice.

Rayne Raven was solid in three innings of relief, combining with great Wildcats fielding to deny the Apaches a score. Freshman Kyle Pruneau pitched the final inning, sealing the day and improving the Wildcats’ record to 4-3.

The loss went to Xavier Altimirano.

The Wildcats play a final contest against Cochise on Saturday at noon.
