Summer Study Abroad Opportunity

Art Class to Tour France/Spain

For 11 days in May, Western Nevada College students will have an opportunity to move their campus from Northern Nevada to France and Spain.

Through an Education First College Study Tour on May 20-30, students can join sightseeing and walking tours of historic spots in Paris, Avignon and Barcelona.

WNC art professor Gil Martin will lead the student tour, with destinations to include the Champs Elysees, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Rodin Museum, Papal Palace, La Padrera and Picasso Museum.

“To fully experience an artwork, it’s absolutely vital that you stand before the real thing,” Martin said. “This travel class is a wonderful opportunity to see in person some of the greatest art and architecture of Europe and participate in a culture different from our own.”

The tour itinerary includes visiting the Notre Dame Cathedral on day two; guided sightseeing of Paris landmarks such as the Champs Elysees, Arc de Triomphe, Les Invalides and the Eiffel Tower on day three; and going to the Rodin Museum and Musee d’Orsay on day four. Day five includes visiting the Louvre, then departing Paris for Avignon. On day six, there will be a walking tour of Avignon, including a stop at the Papal Palace, as well as a walking tour of Arles and plans to go to the Amphitheater and Pont du Gard. On the final day in Avignon, the highlights will be excursions to Aix-en-Provence and Les Baux, including seeing the Atelier Paul Czanne and Chateau des Baux. Day eight mainly will be a travel day but will include a walking tour of Carcassonne before continuing on to Barcelona.

Days nine and 10 will be spent in Barcelona. On the first day in Barcelona, there will be guided sightseeing of Gaudi’s Barcelona, including La Pedrera, Casa Battlo and Parc Guell. The final day will be spent taking a walking tour of Barcelona with stops at the Picasso Museum and La Sagrada Familia. An optional art workshop is built into the schedule.

The touring group will return on the 11th day.

The total cost to students is $4,126 or monthly installments of $576.

Art Appreciation (ART 160) and Art-Field Study (ART 297) will be offered as summer courses at WNC for students interested in receiving college credit in conjunction with the tour. There will be an additional tuition charge on top of the tour price. Students are not required to enroll in a class in order to participate in the tour.
