The Northern Nevada Development Authority has recognized two Western Nevada College employees for their workforce initiatives in the region during the past year.

Linda Devon, WNC’s grant manager for the Workforce Development Center, and David Steiger, director of Economic Development at WNC, were named co-winners of the Silver Apple Award during the Northern Nevada Development Authority's annual Pioneer Awards Banquet at the Carson Nugget.

“David and Linda have been honored for their outstanding work in supporting the new community workforce initiatives across our entire service area," said WNC President Carol Lucey, "and they represent our wonderful team of faculty and staff who have also been involved in these initiatives. Congratulations to David and Linda, and indeed to everyone who is working to make this college a leader in the state."

Their efforts exemplify the ways that community colleges can assist economic and job development, Lucey said.

Devon and Steiger each received a plaque and were honored for their respective work with the 'Right Skills Now' initiative. The manufacturing initiative prepares students for jobs and careers in the manufacturing industry through a fast-paced training program offers them college credit and national industry certifications.

“WNC’s accelerated technical training programs show just how quickly and effectively the college can respond to the workforce training needs of the community,” Steiger said. “We appreciate NNDA's recognition of these innovative programs."

The NNDA annually recognizes businesses and individuals for their outstanding work in a five-county region that includes Carson, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon and Storey.

Devon and Steiger’s competition for the Silver Apple Award included representatives of the State Department of Education, Carson City Library and Nevada Copper Corporation.
