Aspiring young writers couldn’t ask for a better opportunity than the one that will be presented during the upcoming Ventana Sierra Advanced Writers Workshop at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

A free, daylong workshop is being offered to writers age 18 and under on Saturday, June 15. It is designed to help improve and promote their writing through safe and social networking. Four award-winning authors, including Ellen Hopkins, and a literary agent will lead separate topic sessions.

Grants from the Nevada Arts Council are enabling the teens to attend the workshop, which runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at no cost.

Optional one-on-one critiques also are available to the young writers at a manuscript review rate of $100.

The day will begin with coffee and registration at 8 a.m., followed by a welcome from Hopkins at 8:45 a.m. She has written nine New York Times best-selling young adult novels, plus two adult novels-in-verse.

Topics that will include “Keeping It Real: Making Fiction Believable When All (or none) of It Is Made Up,” “Building a Safe Social Networking Platform,” “Creating Compelling Characters,” “Create a Scene,” and “Humor ’em: Spice Your Writing With Humor.”
