Global Warming Expert Offers Free Lecture

A noted researcher and expert on climate change will offer a free lecture at Western Nevada College Carson City on Tuesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. Dr. Michael Dettinger will speak about global warming, as part of WNC’s Earth Week activities. It is sponsored by Sierra Nevada Forums and the WNC Office of Student Life.

Dettinger is a research hydrologist in the U.S. Geological Survey National Research Program, and a Research Associate of Climate at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif.

He has studied global, Western North American, and Sierra Nevadan hydroclimatology of precipitation, snowpack, and stream flow. He uses historical and paleo-records of atmospheric circulations, ocean temperatures, stream flow, groundwater, and water quality.

Dettinger worked in Carson City during the 1980’s, assessing groundwater resources, flow and chemistry in bedrock and aquifers.

The event will take place in the Carson Nugget Community Hall - Aspen Building, second floor. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and Earth Week exhibits will be available for viewing prior to the event.

Afterward, interested participants may meet the scientists at a $10 VIP wine reception. RSVP in advance to Valerie Andersen at 445-3222 for the reception.
