Event raises more than $14,000

'Dancing with the Stars' Waltzes to Success

The Dancing with the Stars, Carson City Edition waltzed, tangoed and shimmied it’s way to a successful conclusion this past weekend. Organizers are calling the competition a huge success. Miss Carson City, Vanessa Macias, took home the mirror ball trophy, but the WNC student nurses were the true winners, with the event raising more than $14,000 for the WNC chapter of the National Student Nursing Association. The money will help the students attend the National Student Nursing convention, which provides both leadership and scholarship opportunities.

Event organizer and WNC NSNA president Lindsay DiMartino is thrilled with the turnout and the dancing. “Everyone did such a great job, plus, Mayor Bob Crowell loved it and hopes we make it an annual event,” she said, adding, “but he says he still doesn’t want to dance.”

Kimberly Seifert, owner of Lake Side Properties took home second place and WNC nursing professor Shelby Hunt won third.

The other local stars who competed included Sheriff Ken Furlong, District Attorney Neil Rombardo, City Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover, City Supervisor/Adele’s co-owner Karen Abowd, Carson Tahoe Health CEO Ed Epperson, Carson High School assistant football coach Kiko Vega, CHS language arts teacher Phillip Brady, WNC nursing professor Sherry Neil-Urban, and Coldwell Banker agent Garrett Lepire.

Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi emceed and was assisted by Carson City Mayor Robert “Bob” Crowell and former mayor Marv Teixeira as event commentators.

DiMartino and other nursing students spent dozens of hours on top of their heavy class schedules putting the event together. “It was worth it, it turned out amazing, even better than we expected. We are so grateful to everyone who took part,” she said. “We can’t wait to do it again next year.”
