Donations to fund scholarships & aid animals

Douglas Students to Wash Cars April 13

The community-minded Douglas Diversity Student Club at Western Nevada College will host a car wash on Saturday, April 13, to help both their two- and four-legged friends.

In their second fundraiser of the 2012-13 school year, the students will wash cars from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Stratton Center in Gardnerville. The club will invite donations, and barbequed food also will be sold.

Proceeds will benefit the Douglas Animal Welfare Group, as well as scholarships for WNC Douglas students.

“We want to touch many areas with our fundraising efforts,” said club adviser Sergio Arteaga. “The community is family-oriented, and most of the kids have pets.”

DAWG is a nonprofit group that rescues, shelters and cares for animals and facilitates the adoption of dogs and cats.

In a November art show and silent auction, the club raised $800 for Austin’s House, an emergency shelter and compassionate care center for children who have been removed from their homes because of neglect or abuse; and its student scholarship fund.

“Our first fundraiser was a success, and we’re hoping this one will be as well,” said Arteaga. “We’re hoping that as we advance in this, we can assist most of the nonprofits and serve different purposes.”

The Stratton Center is located at 1532 U.S. Highway 395, next to Wells Fargo Bank in Gardnerville.
