The Western Nevada College Softball team faced tough competition against the College of Southern Idaho for Friday’s doubleheader. After dropping the first game 0-8, the Wildcats showed that they could compete against the Scenic West Athletic Conference’s leading team. The second game went extra innings before CSI’s eventual 1-0 win in the eighth.

In the first game, the Wildcats fought off the Golden Eagles until the third inning, when errors gave CSI the opportunity to put up six runs. CSI scored an additional run in the fifth and one in the sixth to win the game 8-0 in six innings. Andrea Lee and Caroline McCarthy each managed singles for the Wildcats. Pitcher Alexia Alley took the loss.

“We let one inning get away from us,” said WNC Coach Leah Wentworth. “It’s something we can’t let happen against a team of this caliber."

In the second game, the Wildcats were unable to turn a single by Alisha Nielsen and a double by Lee into runs in the fourth inning. A single by Madison Gonzalez showed promise in the fifth, but she was left stranded. Both teams remained scoreless for a full seven innings, and a lone run by CSI in the eighth was enough to seal it for the Golden Eagles. WNC fell 0-1. Pitcher Carlee Beck took the loss for WNC.

The teams meet again Saturday for a doubleheader at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. Game times are noon and 2 p.m.

“We’ll be looking to make adjustments at the plate, and we need to find ways to bring runners in,” said Wentworth of the team’s effort. “If we can do that, we stand a chance against this team.”
