Record Season High 17 Hits

WNC Slugs Out Win at Ventura College

The Western Nevada College baseball team doesn’t break out the aluminum bats very often, so the Wildcats want to capitalize when they do.

In the first of four games with metal bats in their hands, WNC pounded out a season high 17 hits and scored a season-best 14 runs in a 14-7 nonconference victory at Ventura College Wednesday in Ventura, Calif.

WNC, which uses wood bats in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, scored five times in the second inning and was never threatened in the school’s’ first-ever meeting.

“The ball was really jumping. We hit a couple of line drives that carried over outfielders’ heads,” said WNC Coach D.J. Whittemore.

The Wildcats (10-3) entered the fifth game of an eight-game road trip averaging just over five runs and slightly less than eight hits per game. Sophomore Donald Glover Jr. got the WNC bats rattling with a two-run triple in a five-run second inning. Tony Roque brought home Glover with a squeeze bunt.

Cole Ferguson and Connor Klein added triples of their own before WNC’s best day at the plate ended. Glover led the Wildcat attack with three hits, while Klein, Alex Fife, AJ Hernandez and Matt Becker contributed two hits apiece.

The Wildcats also played well in the field, throwing out several runners on the bases" all without committing an error. “We played very clean. We turned three double plays, and they weren’t of the garden variety,” Whittemore said.

Freshman pitcher Christian Stolo of McQueen High School in Reno took over the staff lead with his third victory. Stolo (3-1), one of six pitchers utilized by Whittemore, relieved in the second inning and worked 1 1/3 frames. “We would have liked to pitch better than we did,” Whittemore said.

WNC will complete its road swing with a three-game series at Riverside, Calif., Thursday through Saturday. “Riverside is going to easily be the best-hitting team we’ve played yet,” the coach said.
