On Display Through March 22

Reno Artist Brings Her Work to WNC

Lynn Schmidt’s artwork has its roots in Northern Nevada’s stunning natural forms. It is also influenced by the intrigue of those who travel the Silver State’s lonely highways. Her watercolor paintings and prints will show as part of “Segments of the Path, a Mini Retrospective” Monday, Feb. 11, through Friday, March 22, at Western Nevada College Carson City campus. A free public reception is Tuesday, Feb. 19, 5-6 p.m. in the College Gallery.

Schmidt’s most recent artwork was inspired by the impact receding glaciers in the Sierra have had on boulders. “The random placement of these huge rocks seems for me to echo other random occurrences in life,’ she said. Among the natural forms she presents is “Erractic I,” a monoprint.

Her latest work has involved a mixed media process blending watercolor painting and printmaking techniques. “They are basically one-of-a-kind prints which utilize ink rolled onto a blank plate in conjunction with stencils of Yupo paper, which has been painted with watercolor pigments,” she said.

Some of Schmidt’s earlier work also will be on display. While living east of Lovelock and traveling Interstate 80, she became inspired about the many trucks that transport goods across Nevada.

“I visited truck stops to photograph these trucks, which are often homes of their drivers and objects of much pride,” Schmidt said. “For me, they were objects of design and color that embodied the romance of the road.” The efforts led to a series of watercolor paintings in 2003 that she termed “Trucks,” and “Under 80” and “Under.”

Schmidt’s work has appeared at the Business Resource Innovation Center in Carson City, Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, The Windows in Reno, Wild Flower Village in Reno, Washoe County Library in Reno, and South Reno United Methodist Church.
