Will Bring Strength to Defense

Wildcats Sign Damonte Ranch Twins

Western Nevada College Head Softball Coach Leah Wentworth has made it a priority to recruit local student athletes into her program. For the first time, a pair of talented student athletes from Damonte Ranch High School in Reno have chosen to continue the sport they love as a Western Nevada College Wildcat.

WNC recently signed twins Makenzie and Meghan Hospodka, who helped the Mustangs win the 2012 Northern Nevada region title and advance to the state tournament.

“I’m really excited to have both of them come here,” said Wentworth, whose 14-player roster for 2013 includes nine from Northern Nevada. “I’m glad to get a couple more top athletes from the area who will be able to come in and put pressure on our returnees, and make an impact on the program when they get here.

“Anytime we get a student athlete from a local school, there tends to be more interest in our program from that same school in the future.”

As juniors, the Hospodkas helped Damonte Ranch compile a 26-12 record. Meghan, a shortstop and second baseman, hit .317, totaling 39 hits in 123 at-bats. She was second on the club with 10 doubles and 31 runs scored. Makenzie, an outfielder and third baseman, provided power as a junior. Besides averaging .296 at the plate, she belted a team-high five triples and delivered four doubles and two homers.

Because of the twins’ athleticism, Wentworth is encouraged that they will give her some flexibility in putting together her defense.

“Anytime you get a center fielder or shortstop, they have some versatility. We’ll see where they best fit and can help the team most,” Wentworth said.
