Learn seed starting and saving techniques

Seed Starting Workshop

A limited number of spots remain for a second Seeding Starting and Saving Workshop being offered by the Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute on Saturday, Jan. 12. The session runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the WNC Carson Campus, 2201 W. College Parkway.

Those interested are encouraged to register as soon as possible. An initial workshop coming up in December quickly reached student capacity. The fee is $35 if registered by Thursday, Jan. 4 and $45 thereafter. It includes lunch and a tour of Hungry Mother Organics Nursery in Minden.

The workshop also features a classroom lecture and hands-on demonstrations of seed starting and saving techniques. Students will learn the cultural practices of seed starting, including heat, light, moisture, containers, hardening off and transplanting; seeding mediums and sources; cost comparisons of self-produced vs. purchased transplants; seed saving options; and an overview of farm grown native seed production and seed production for resale. Participants are encouraged to bring samples to learn proper seed cleaning techniques.

Featured speakers include Mark O’Farrell of Hungry Mother Organics and Ed Kleiner of Comstock Seed. O’Farrell is an experienced farmer and business owner with more than 20 years of farming experience. Kleiner has provided seed and consultation services for more than 25 years and owns a 43-acre seed farm in Gardnerville.
