Making The Holidays a Little Brighter

WNC Fallon Food Drive Helps Needy

Thanksgiving Day will be much better for needy local families in Fallon because of a Holiday Food Drive by the Associated Students of Western Nevada College. The WNC student government group is working with New Frontier in Fallon to provide a Thanksgiving food basket and personal care items to needy families for the holidays.

“Our goal is to be able to help them provide the best Thanksgiving meals to those who may be less fortunate than ourselves,” said Alana Rogne, an ASWN representative. “We’ve had a good turnout of students donating.”

Collections will continue through Tuesday, Nov. 20, and will be distributed to New Frontier. The nonprofit corporation in Fallon has helped feed 110 families per week since 2007.

“We chose to help New Frontier food pantry because it is an organization that started when their own building burned down in 2007 and was forced to let 19 employees go because they no longer had a building to work from. New Frontier then set up a food pantry that started feeding those employees that lost their jobs and now has a food pantry that hands food out on a daily basis to any person who may need help,” Rogne said.

Food items needed most are Thanksgiving-related products such as stuffing, mashed potatoes, canned yams, cranberries, and marshmallows, as well as nonperishable goods such as canned meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, pasta, macaroni and cheese, beans, cereals, nuts, granola bars, cookies, crackers, Jell-O, pudding, rice side dishes, pancake/cake/brownie mixes, shelf-stable milk or powdered milk, juices, cooking oil, instant potatoes, sugar, coffee, tea, peanut butter, jam, jelly and condiments.

Personal care donation items needed are deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, razors, shaving cream, etc.
ASWN has collection barrels, in front of Virgil Getto Hall and at the front entry of Pinon Hall. Donations can be made at those collection spots until 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.
