Western Nevada College student-athlete Anthony Consiglio has been recognized by the National Junior College Athletics Association for his academic achievements over the past year.

The Wildcats baseball player compiled a 3.81 GPA for the academic year to receive the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement.

"'Ace' was tremendous in all areas," WNC Baseball Coach D.J. Whittemore said of Consiglio. "He exemplified what being a Wildcat is all about - excellence in the classroom, on the field and in life."

The 6-foot-2 right-hander from Las Vegas appeared in 15 games and struck out 51 batters in 43 2/3 innings.

"His work ethic and unselfishness permeated the entire pitching staff and even the rest of the team, and was a major factor in the 2012 team setting the school record for wins (48) in a season," Whittemore said.

Consiglio has accepted a scholarship to pitch at the University of New Mexico next season. "We couldn't be happier or more proud of his success," Whittemore said.
