Heading for JUCO World Series

Wildcats Vault to Fourth, Sixth in Polls

With a Western District Tournament title in hand, the Western Nevada College baseball team made a dramatic climb in two national polls this week.

The Wildcats shot up to No. 4 in the Perfect Game top-50 poll released on Tuesday and ascended to No. 6 in the National Junior College Athletic Association top-20 poll that came out on Wednesday.

Western Nevada (47-15) was previously ranked 13th by Perfect Game and 20th by the NJCAA.
Last weekend, WNC upset then-second-ranked Salt Lake twice on the Bruins' home field to claim its third Western District title. The Wildcats will open the 10-team NJCAA World Series against Polk State (45-10) of Winter Haven, Fla., at 2 p.m. (PST) on Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo. Polk State is rated No. 2 by Perfect Game and No 3 by NJCAA.

"At this point, you can throw the polls out," said WNC Head Coach D.J. Whittemore.

WNC was ranked in the top 10 earlier this season, and Whittemore previously said he's had teams ranked as high as third.

Iowa Western (57-5) tops both polls.
