Western Nevada College students have elected new leaders to represent them in 2012-2013. Elected as president of the Associated Students of Western Nevada is Curtis Blackwell, who first enrolled at WNC in the fall of 2010 with the long-range plan of becoming a public servant. That goal is becoming more realistic as Blackwell has been selected by his peers to represent the student body during the next academic school year.

"I decided to run for president in order to better serve the students attending WNC," said Blackwell. "I want to demonstrate the value of service leadership. The ultimate goal is to leave ASWN stronger than when I arrived and give the students a college experience that they can be proud of."

Blackwell has served as a representative and senator since becoming involved with ASWN last spring. He has pinpointed where he wants to make improvements at the college.

"The areas that I want to improve are better communication between ASWN and the students, faculty and our elected officials," Blackwell said. "I want to increase student involvement in school events and community service projects."

Blackwell will intern with the Nevada State Legislature next spring and pursue a bachelor's degree in lobbying, public administration or international affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The 2012-2013 ASWN governing board will also include vice president Lorena Cedano, treasurer Alejandra Leon and senators Jacob Council, Kelsey Reece and Frankie Perez.

ASWN is seeking four additional senators and a secretary. Student representatives are welcome, and there isn't a limit on how many can serve. For information, call 445-3323.
