Head for Region 18 Tournament

Wildcats Win One Against CSI

The Western Nevada College softball team finished its final Scenic West Athletic Conference series with a positive day of play Saturday, grabbing a win and battling to extra innings against the College of Southern Idaho. The Wildcats finished the weekend 1-3 but found momentum they can build on as they head to the Region 18 tournament Thursday-Saturday, May 12-14, in Salt Lake City.

In Friday's match-up against the Scenic West Athletic Conference's second-ranked team, Western fell, 3-12 and 1-9. Wildcats scoring in the opener came in the first inning when Niki DiSera singled and was brought home on a home run by Jordan Thomas, and in the fifth when Thomas singled and scored on a double by Ashley Hall. Additional hits came from Melanie Pfeiffer and Megan Hein.

WNC was held scoreless in game two until the fourth inning when Ashley Gleason doubled, Hein singled, and Jamie Klopatek was walked to load the bases. Pfeiffer was hit by a pitch, which brought in Gleason. Additional hits came from Thomas and Hein, who each had singles.

On Saturday, WNC came to win and did just that, edging CSI 2-1 in the opener. Solid defense by the Wildcats left the Golden Eagles scoreless until the final inning. WNC drove in runs when Hall led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a single by Vondrak. A single by Hein scored Vondrak. Getting action off the bat was Hein with a double, and Thomas, Pfeiffer, Klopatek and Hall with singles. Klopatek went the distance in the circle to earn the win.

In the final match-up, WNC kept CSI sweating, taking the game into extra innings, but CSI would open it up in the eighth to win 7-2. Wildcats hits included singles from Thomas (2), Klopatek, Pfeiffer (2) and Gleason.

Coach Leah Wentworth commended the team for Saturday's showing. "Our pitchers did a great job for us. They kept the hitters off balance and made them work to earn their way on base. Defensively, we played solid and forced CSI to leave a lot of runners on base."

Now, the Wildcats look forward to the Region 18 softball tournament, where they will meet College of Southern Nevada in the first round Thursday. Time will be announced when it is available.

Wentworth said, "If we can carry this momentum into regionals, anything is possible. We are entering a new season, and we'll be looking to produce some upsets."
