Wildcats Get Hits But Struggle to Score

The WNC softball team faced the girls from the northern country, and another bout of unfavorable weather over the weekend in Couer d'Alene Idaho. WNC fell to North Idaho College in three games, and was unable to play a fourth game as scheduled, due to inclement weather. Western came away with a total of 32 hits and 17 runs for the series, but fell 9-13, 4-9 and 4-12.

Coach Leah Wentworth said, "We competed all day with our sticks. We hit the ball hard, but we continue to make mistakes on the bases that take us out of innings."

In the opener, Ashley Hall and Melanie Pfeiffer led the Wildcats in hits. Hall tapped two singles and a two-run home run, and Pfeiffer tallied three singles. Tera Tibbits helped her team with a three-run homer, Cassie Vondrak (RBI) and Jordan Thomas grabbed doubles, and Sarah Cudahy, Jamie Klopatek, and Tori Hynick each had singles. Vondrak took the loss for Western. She pitched one inning and was relieved by Klopatek.

In the second game, Megan Hein, Ashley Gleason, Thomas and Vondrak each knocked two hits for WNC, and Pfeiffer, Cudahy, Hall, Tibbits, and Niki DiSera each got solo hits for Western.

Game three saw Vondrak go a perfect 3-3 with a three-run homer and two singles, and Hall, Hein, Mikeala Henshaw and Pfeiffer hit singles.

Hall started on the mound in the two final games. She faced a total of 64 batters, striking out six and allowing 17 hits.

"Ashley did a great job for us on the mound," Wentworth said. "She was moving the ball around and keeping the hitters from making solid contact."

The Wildcats return home to Edmonds Sports Complex to face Snow College, Friday, April 22, at 1 and 3 p.m., and Saturday, April 23, at noon and 2 p.m.
