Wildcats Fall to Southern Idaho

The Western Nevada College softball team anticipated a challenging series against nationally ranked College of Southern Idaho (NJCAA #13) as they headed to Twin Falls last weekend. The Wildcats managed 11 hits in the four-game series, but were unable to grab a win from SCI.

Coach Leah Wentworth said, " Southern Idaho is always really tough with strong bats. Our pitchers struggled to hit their spots, and SCI took advantage of it."

In Friday's opener, WNC capitalized on a weak inning and grabbed one run when SCI walked Ashley Gleason and Jamie Klopatek, and allowed Tera Tibbitts and Jordan Thomas to reach on a fielders' choice. Klopatek scored when Megan Hein walked. Hits in the first game included a double by Ashley Hall in the first inning and a single by Cassie Vondrak in the sixth inning. SCI won the opening game, 9-1.

In the second game, WNC scored when Sarah Cudahy singled to score Tibbitts who reached on an error, and Hall singled to score Melanie Pfeiffer who also reached on an error. WNC fell, 2-10.

On Saturday, it was home runs that put the Wildcats on the board. Hall homered in the first game and Hein and Pfeiffer each smacked one in the second contest. Additional hits came from Hein, Hall and Thomas, who each tapped singles. WNC fell to CSI, 1-9 and 2-19.

Wentworth said, "Our offense struggled to put the ball in play and not scoring runs really hurt us."

At times this season, the team has put up the numbers, grabbing 32 hits from the College of Southern Nevada and 35 hits from Colorado Northwestern Community College. Perhaps at an opportune moment, the Wildcats have a bye this weekend to revitalize their bats and prepare to host league leading powerhouse Salt Lake Community College. That series is Friday-Saturday, April 1-2, at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. SLCC currently is ranked fifth by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
