Wildcats Win One, Head Home for CSN Series

The Wildcats' weekend trip to Ephraim, Utah started well, but ended with a let-down as they lost three of four at Snow College. Now, WNC is happy to be home for a four-game series Friday and Saturday against in-state rival College of Southern Nevada.

Doubleheaders are scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at noon at Edmonds Park Field A in southeast Carson City.

At Snow College, WNC loaded the bases in the seventh inning of the opener, but a close call at first took them out of the inning, leading to a 6-4 loss. But in the second game, the bats came alive for a 9-7 win.

"We played competitive softball all day," said Coach Leah Wentworth. "Our defense was solid and our pitchers did a great job of getting us outs. We had a great day at the plate and made good contact from one through nine in the lineup."

However, Saturday's doubleheader was fraught with errors, as the Wildcats scored only one run and lost 10-1 and 8-0.

"At this level, an error is a run and we had six errors on the day," Wentworth said. "We had hits early in the first game and then couldn't manage to make solid contact."

In game one, Sarah Cudahy hit 2-3, Melanie Pfeiffer was 2-4 with a double, Ashley Gleason went 1-2 with a double and an RBI, Megan Hein went 1-3 with an RBI, and Mikaela Henshaw was 1-3.

Game two was highlighted by pitcher Cassie Vondrak, who got the win on the mound, and also hit 2-4 and four RBI; Hein, who went 3-4; Ashley Hall, who got the pitching start and also hit 1-2 with an RBI; Ashley Gleason, who went 1-2, Cudahy, who hit 1-4 with an RBI; Pfeiffer, who was 1-5 with two RBI; and Niki DiSera, who went 1-4.

Game three was a struggle for Vondrak on the mound, and for WNC hitters as well. DiSera was productive, hitting 2-3 with an RBI for the Wildcats' only score of the day. Pfeiffer hit 2-3, and both Cudahy and Gleason went 1-3.

The final contest featured a triple by Vondrak, who went 1-2, and Cudahy, who was 1-2. The Wildcats now stand at 2-15 on the season.
