WNC Alumni Find Success in D-1 Schools

Western Nevada College baseball alumni continue to impress after transferring to notable NCAA Division I universities.

After the first week of play, a number of former Wildcats were making a difference. Five former Wildcat pitchers earned opening weekend starts, going a combined 4-0 to start the season. In total, 10 former Wildcat pitchers saw action on the mound.

- 2010 WNC graduate David Carroll, now at the University of Maryland, picked up right where he left off at WNC and beat No. 6 Texas in Austin in his first Division I start. He pitched six innings, giving up just three hits and had four strikeouts, while allowing a single run.

- Jordan Lewis, now the game two starter for the University of Houston, pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball and received the win over Texas-Arlington for his D-I debut.

-Kramer Champlin, a 2010 WNC grad, started for the eighth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils and went six innings, allowing two runs and striking out three to get the win against University of New Mexico.

-Former Wildcat pitcher James Crockett started for Southern Utah University and went five innings with nine strikeouts in his team's first win of 2011.

-Logan Odom, a 2009 WNC graduate, earned an opening weekend start for University of Southern California against No. 29 University of North Carolina.

Other Wildcat graduates who saw time on the mound included Jeremy Gendlek (2010 graduate) who threw two innings for Utah Valley University. Jake Waardenburg (2010 graduate) pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball for the University of Pacific. Riley Bevill (2010 graduate) pitched two innings of scoreless baseball for New Mexico State University in his D-1 debut. Josh Moody (2009 graduate) is back for his senior season at Arizona State University and pitched in relief, earning a hold. Former Wildcat Matt Klein appeared in relief for Oklahoma State University. Former pitchers Kyle Starratt (2009 graduate) is at TCU and James Nygren is pitching for Oregon State but neither have seen action yet in 2011.

Former Wildcats hitters were led by 2009 graduate Travis Feiner, who is now a senior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Feiner started at third base for the Rebels and had three hits with four runs and five runs batted in, in their four-game sweep against Maine. Jerome Pena (2009 graduate) is returning to Texas Christian University, where he earned Mountain West first team honors a year ago and hit two home runs in the College World Series in leading TCU to third place. Pena played second base and hit leadoff for the Horned Frogs, with four hits and three RBI his first weekend back. Brian Barnett (2009 graduate) earned pre-season All-American honors after leading the Wolf Pack in home runs, slug, total bases, and RBI's a year ago. He picked up right where he left of and homered in each of the Pack's first two games this season. Chuck Howard (2008 graduate) played in all three games of the opening weekend starting two games behind the plate for New Mexico State. 2010 graduate Chris Sinclair started behind the plate for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

2009 graduate Mike Long looks to be the starter in centerfield for Prairie View A&M once he returns to full strength after a knee injury delayed his D-I debut. Other Wildcats on D-I rosters include two injured players who will be red-shirting this season - Spencer Ofelt (2010 graduate) at Cal State Fullerton, and Jay Skilton (2010 graduate) University of Nevada, Reno.
