WNC Looks to Rebound from Tough Weekend

Wildcats Softball Prepares for Home Opener

The Western Nevada College softball team knew they would face strong competition when they drew the defending Scenic West Athletic Conference champion Salt Lake Community College for its season opener. This past weekend, the Wildcats fell to SLCC in four games.

WNC managed 14 hits through the series, but could not contain the NJCAA No. 3 ranked team. WNC Coach Leah Wentworth said, "Against a team like Salt Lake, an error or a walk will usually result in a run, and this weekend was no exception."

On Friday, Carson High School grad Megan Hein produced the lone hit for WNC in a 10-0 opener. Wildcat bats came alive in the second game with a solo home run by Ashley Gleason and an RBI by Wooster High School grad Melanie Pfeiffer. Niki DiSera, Ashley Hall, Jordan Thomas and Sarah Cudahy also earned hits, but the Wildcats fell 10-2 in five innings.
On Saturday, DiSera, Hall and Cudahy tallied hits in the first game, while Pfeiffer, Gleason and Thomas (2) earned hits in the nightcap, but the Wildcats were unable to score, falling 9-0 and 8-0.

"We'll be looking to make adjustments to pitching and hitting and to bring more pressure defensively in preparation for this weekend," Wentworth said.

WNC opens at home against Colorado Northwestern Community College. CNCC has logged more pre-season play than the Wildcats, but enters the series at 0-14. The series should be competitive; the teams split their 2010 match-ups, 4-4, and Western edged Colorado Northwestern for a spot in the Region 18 post-season tournament.

Doubleheaders are Friday, Feb. 18, at 1 and 3 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 19, at noon and 2 p.m. at Edmonds Sports Complex, Field A, 1555 Livermore Lane, Carson City.
