2011 Home Opener Friday-Saturday, Feb. 18-19

Wildcats Softball Team Is Ready For Action

The Western Nevada College softball team is ready with new talent and a will to win as they prepare for the 2011 season, which begins Friday, Feb. 11, in Saint George, Utah.

Coach Leah Wentworth says, "The work ethic of these young ladies supersedes that of anything that we have had in the past. They are not only willing to let us push them further than they think is possible, but they are also willing to push themselves. We are excited to take the field and put all of our hard work into action."

Ashley Hall and Cassie Vondrak are the only two Wildcats returning from last season. Hall led the 2010 team in hitting (.263) and homeruns (4), and her experience will be key to igniting the offense. Vondrak is coming off a medical redshirt and will be instrumental on the mound for Western. She throws with velocity and can be counted on to hit with power.

Notable local players include Carson High School alum Megan Hein, who brings a powerful bat and will be a vocal leader behind the plate; former Virginia City High School teammates Tori Hynick and Amanda Bohl; and Melanie Pfeiffer and Mikaela Henshaw from Wooster High School. Watch for Bohl to use her speed on the base paths and in the outfield, and for Hynick to bring power to the bat. Pfeiffer is a lefty with great ball control and has been considered the spark plug of the defense with great range in the midfield. Henshaw is a contact hitter who keeps the opponents guessing with the short game.

Rounding out the team are Sarah Cudahy (Centennial HS, Las Vegas), a flexible first base player and good contact hitter; Niki DiSera (Riverton, Utah), who is aggressive at the plate and quick around the bags; Ashley Gleason (Clinton, Utah), a utility player with a powerful and consistent bat; Jamie Klopatek (Rathdrum, Idaho), who will share time on the mound and keep hitters off balance with her changing speeds and ball movement; Terra Tibbitts (Lincoln HS, Panaca), who covers a lot of ground in the outfield and is a tough out for pitchers; and Jordan Thomas (Rathdrum, Idaho), a solid outfielder with a strong arm.

The Wildcats open Friday-Saturday, Feb. 11-12, against a tough opponent - Salt Lake Community College, the 2010 Region 18 champion that is ranked preseason No. 3 by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

WNC begins home play at Edmonds Sports Complex against Colorado Northwestern Community College, Friday, Feb. 18, at 1 and 3 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 19, at noon and 2 p.m. Edmonds Sports Complex is located at 1555 Livermore Lane, Carson City.
