Baseball America Adds to Team's Rankings

Wildcats Open 3-1 On The Road

The Western Nevada College baseball team came off its first weekend with a respectable 3-1 record to kick off the 2011 season. The four-game series in Las Vegas against South Mountain Community College of Phoenix left Wildcats Coach DJ Whittemore with a positive perspective.

"The first weekend was a big step in the right direction," he said. "As was to be expected, our defense was a little shaky in the infield after spending the last six months on turf and then moving to the natural surface."

WNC won the series 8-5, 3-1, 2-3 and 9-5. But, Whittemore said, "The bullpen was really the story of the week. Everyone did their job and pitched at a high level," including Teryn Smith, a freshman from Churchill County High School in Fallon, who led the way with two saves.

"Our starting pitcher did a great job of soaking up innings and grinding out some tough ball games," the coach said. "Offensively, I thought we had a bunch of quality at bats even though we didn't have a lot of hits.

"Just playing four close games against a quality club helps us in accomplishing our goal of getting ready for conference play," Whittemore said.

The Wildcats baseball team has been tabbed as the sixth best team in the country in a poll recently released by Collegiate Baseball. In addition, the team has now been ranked fifth among 500 junior college teams by Baseball America magazine/website, and was ranked No. 19 by the NJCAA.
