Atomic Testing Book Event in Fallon

Bombast - Spinning Atoms in the Desert
"Bombast - Spinning Atoms in the Desert"

Western Nevada College Emeritus English Professor Michon Mackedon is sharing her passion with the world. The longtime Fallon resident has just released her first book, "Bombast: Spinning Atoms in the Desert," a discussion about Nevada's history of nuclear testing.

Having just completed literary events in several Nevada communities, she is returning home for a free event at the WNC Fallon campus art gallery on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 5:30-6:30 p.m., in Virgil Getto Hall.

Mackedon willl present photographs illustrating Nevada's involvement with above ground testing, underground testing - specifically at the Shoal Nuclear Test Site in Fallon - and the proposed nuclear waste site. She will also offer one or two brief readings from the book.

After the presentation, Mackedon will remain available until about 7 p.m. to speak with visitors and sign copies of the book. Light refreshments will be served.
Mackedon served for two decades on the Nevada Commission on Nuclear Projects, and became intensely interested in the issue of the above ground and underground nuclear weapon explosions that took place in Nevada between 1951 and 1993. She also explored the dilemmas caused by declarations of the Silver State as a "wasteland," guarantees of "sound science" to justify testing, and an ongoing effort to designate Nevada as the nation's nuclear waste repository.

"Bombast" received a highly favorable review by author and New York Times editorial writer Dennis Smith, and has received support from Nevada Humanities.
