WNC will host a free lecture in honor of Veterans Day and Disability Awareness Month on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. in Marlette Hall on the Carson City campus. John Register, an Army veteran and Paralympian, will speak about his experiences at the 2000 Paralympic Games and his ongoing work with members of the armed forces who have been injured in combat.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by WNC Disability Support Services.

Register grew up in Illinois as an avid athlete, swimming competitively and playing baseball, football, and then track and field, where he was a three-time All-American at the University of Arkansas. Upon completing his bachelor's degree, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served from 1988 to 1994 in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Continuing to pursue athletic excellence, he won nine gold medals in Armed Services competition, and qualified for the Olympic trials in 1988 and 1992. Then, on May 17, 1994, Register's life was forever altered by a misstep over a hurdle. His useless left knee was amputated and he would have been confined to a wheelchair.

But Register's mental strength and desire led him to choose a prosthesis and arduous rehabilitation to bring him back not only to allow moderate activity, but to the level of the world's elite athletes. After only 18 months of training, he qualified for and made the 1996 United States Paralympic Team as a swimmer, competing in the finals of the 4x400 medly relay. He set a goal of competing in the 2000 Paralympic Games, and met it, earning a silver medal.

John will share his experiences, offering wisdom and insight into handling adversity and using mind over matter to meet goals.
