It all began as a way to get together with other artists who enjoy printmaking.

Four years later, the Printmakers' Conspiracy is a creative and committed organization of Nevada artists who not only show their work but also provide educational projects in schools, and workshops for fellow printmakers.

Western Nevada College Carson City art galleries are hosting a diverse summer exhibit of works by 22 printmakers, through Thursday, Sept. 2.

"Secrets Revealed" explores many styles and techniques in printmaking: lithography, embossing, etching, woodcutting, screen printing, digital printing, solar plating, hand tinting, and more. Cloth, paper and wood are transformed into fascinating works of art.

Reno artist Candace Nicol said, "We decided on the name "Printmakers' Conspiracy" because of how mysterious printmaking is to the public and how much fun printmakers seem to have when they get together in a print shop and collaborate."

WNC Art Professor Sharon Tetly, a member of the group, described it as a "loose-knit organization whose goal is to expand the audience for artistic printmaking by increasing public awareness of traditional and contemporary techniques, through exhibitions and print exchanges." She said the exhibit also includes the Education Portfolio of prints and support materials that the group developed to introduce printmaking to local schools.

To culminate the exhibition, a public reception and poetry performance are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 1, 4:30-6 p.m. Poet Robert Gonzalez will present "Acts of Creation Exposed" at 5:15 p.m., during the reception.

WNC Carson City art galleries are located in the Bristlecone Building. Hours: 8 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays; 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, with holiday closures. Information: 445-3000.
