The Wildcats look for wins against Salt Lake

The Race is on in the Scenic West

It is a tight race for the top spot in the Scenic West Athletic Conference heading into this weekend's series. College of Southern Nevada sits in first place, two games ahead of the Wildcats baseball team. Western slipped to second place after winning only one game in the four-game series at the College of Southern Idaho last weekend.

"We didn't get the result we were hoping for in Twin Falls, and historically that has been a tough place for us to play," said Wildcats Head Coach DJ Whittemore. "CSI was better prepared and outplayed us in every phase."

The 2-1 Wildcats victory came in the final game of the series. WNC scored in the second inning when Colby Sokol's RBI single brought in Eric Maupin, and the winning run came in the third on a ground out by Kevin Taylor that scored Jay Skilton. Jeremy Gendlek was the winning pitcher.

WNC delivered a run in the third inning of game one Saturday on an RBI double by Taylor to score Andrew Garcia. CSI won, 1-3. Friday's games yielded losses for WNC, 1-2 and 0-3. The lone run came in the seventh inning of the game one when Sean Dwyer hit an RBI single to score Spencer Ofelt, who doubled to start the inning.

The final weeks of conference play bring pivotal games for the top three teams. The Wildcats travel to Utah to face Salt Lake Community College, on Friday-Saturday, April 30-May 1. SLCC sits in third place, two games behind WNC.

"SLCC is a very good team and has the highest scoring offense in the league with eight of the conference's top 17 hitters," Whittemore said. "We will have our hands full trying to find a way to win on the road."

Weekend wins may help secure the second place seat for Western, and could push the Wildcats to the top if the College of Eastern Utah manages to split their series with CSN.
