2010 Multicultural Festival Offers Music, Art

Prepare to be impressed by the diverse and rich culture that surrounds us. Western Nevada College offers a colorful mixture of music, dance, food and fun at Saturday's 15th annual Multicultural Festival.

The event, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carson City campus, is free to all and includes exhibits, children's activities, ethnic food for sale, and raffle prizes.

The full entertainment schedule follows, although times are subject to change:
11-11:25 a.m. Eagle Wing Pageant Dancers - Native American group
11:40-12.05 p.m. Brass Akwards - Swing Band
12:20-12:45 Mariachi Cazadores
1-1:25 Reno Taiko Drummers - Traditional Japanese Drumming
1:30-1:35 Announce Festival Photo Essay Winner
1:35-2 Country Valley Jug Stompers - Country, Jazz, Fusion
2:10-2:35 Milton Merlos - Flamenco Guitarist
2:40-2:50 WNC Latino Club Dance
2:55-3:10 Axis of Power - West Coast Hip Hop Trio
3:15-3:30 Carson ATA Karate Academy Demonstration
3:40-4:05 Sound Evolution - Historical Journey Through Rock

Exhibitors will include: African arts, basket making, Chinese culture, Peruvian arts and crafts, spinning and weaving, Turkish culture, Finnish music and costumes, and more.

Children's activities will include African ceremonial masks, Indian Rangoli art, Japanese paper carp, diversity skits, and more.

As a bonus, the festival includes a free showing of the film "Nature of Existence" on Friday, May 14, at 7 p.m.

Purchase raffle tickets for the chance to win prizes from The Basil Restaurant, Bike Habitat, Harrah's, Harvey's, Mount Rose Ski Resort, Garibaldi's, Jamba Juice, Keva Juice, museums of Carson City and WNC.

Raffle tickets ($1 each or six for $5) to help support the festival are available from Shelly Bale or Ronnie Gibbs in Counseling Services, Christina Hillis in Student Life, Rosalba Cadena De Armas in Cedar 331, JW Lazzari in Financial Assistance, Elvia Garcia in Adult Literacy and Language, or Daryl Frezetti, part-time instructor.
