Wildcats Stay Even With CSI After Losses

The Wildcats baseball team stayed even in the series with College of Southern Idaho after two losses, 2-0 and 2-1, at John L. Harvey Field Saturday. WNC is now 18-9 overall and 6-6 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

Western survived a pitching duel on Friday, besting the Golden Eagles 3-1 and 8-7 in the first doubleheader of a four-game stand. But Saturday, the Wildcats' bats fell silent in game one, and WNC searched for consistency on the mound in game two.

A scoreless contest until the top of the ninth inning, it took just one CSI walk and two singles to make the difference. Starting WNC pitcher Jake Waardenburg kept the Golden Eagles empty-handed for 8 and 1/3 innings before a walk and a Wildcats pitching change. CSI then benefitted from a single and a walk, followed by an RBI double for the only runs.

WNC's three hits came in the fifth inning when catcher Pat McMeel doubled, and in the sixth inning off singles by third baseman Kevin Taylor and designated hitter Kyle Conwell.

In game two, Western struggled on both sides of the diamond, giving up nine hits and leaving six Wildcats on base. WNC's lone run came in the second inning when shortstop Spencer Ofelt hit an RBI single, scoring Conwell off a fielding error by CSI.

Ofelt led Wildcats batters, hitting 2-3. Catcher Chris Sinclair and centerfielder Trevor Goff each hit 1-2; Conwell and Taylor went 1-3 apiece.

WNC Head Coach DJ Whittemore sees plenty of room for improvement. "We were out-coached and outplayed most of the series," he said.

The Wildcats will host current SWAC leader Salt Lake Community College in Carson City this weekend. Doubleheaders are scheduled for noon on Friday and Saturday at John L. Harvey Field.
