Enjoy a lighthearted look at traveling through the Silver State in a new art exhibit at Western Nevada College. "Stop the Car, Dad!" offers a collection of photographs that showcase Nevada's roadside attractions, on display from Wednesday, Sept. 23, to Friday, Nov. 13, at WNC Fallon, 160 Campus Way, in the Virgil Getto Hall gallery.

Artist Erik Lauritzen was captivated by the evidence of human presence affecting the Western landscape on lightly traveled roads. From abandoned military installations to strange roadside architecture, the sites Lauritzen photographed reveal a certain irony often underlying everyday encounters in the Nevada desert.

"Stop the Car, Dad!" takes its name from the moment of curiosity that often accompanies the discovery of a roadside attraction. Whether bizarre, beautiful, or disturbing, these unexpected sites are strangely alluring. Lauritzen's images in particular record places where development has given way to dilapidation. Now abandoned, these way-stations are evidence of the "boom and bust" lifestyle accompanying Nevada's mining industry. Solitary signs and deserted buildings emerge as intriguing records of history.

Lauritzen died in 2007, and is remembered as a beloved and respected member of the northern Nevada arts community. He was also a college instructor, and established the photography department at Truckee Meadows Community College. The exhibit was organized by the Nevada Arts Council and is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative, Traveling Exhibition Program, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nevada State Legislature.
