"Always Lost" Exhibits in Carson City Through September 3

Summer Art Show Explores Cost of War

The faces of 4,000 American service members who have died serving in Iraq are the inspiration for a summer art exhibit at Western Nevada College. "Always Lost" is a unique display of photos, facts, poems and prose on display in the College Gallery at Western Nevada College's Carson City campus. It runs through Thursday, Sept. 3.

The exhibit is the result of collaboration between WNC creative writing and sociology students, who combined dozens of personal essays with hundreds of photographs and a series of statistics about the Iraq conflict. The title "Always Lost" comes from a Gertrude Stein quotation about conflict: "War is never fatal but always lost. Always lost."

Sociology Professor Don Carlson approached English Professor Marilee Swirczek with an idea to collaborate between his sociology class which would research and quantify the impersonal demographics of the Iraq War, and her creative writing class which would personalize the war through poems and prose.

What began as a consideration of the distant effects of the Iraq War on the U.S. population has evolved into a powerful meditation on the personal effects of war on the individual. Many photos were taken by WNC students who are Iraq War veterans.

Swirczek said the offers a space in which visitors can contemplate the impersonal demographics and personal costs of the conflict, while participating in a powerful communal experience about this war and wars in general.

"We don't have a political point to make," Swirczek said. "We want to think about all aspects of war, from the mother waiting at home to the soldier in the trenches."

The College Gallery is located in Western's Bristlecone Building in Carson City. It is open this summer during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
