League leading Western Nevada College widened the spread in the battle for the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball championship after taking a key doubleheader from second place College of Southern Nevada Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats topped their cross-state rival 10-4 in the opener and then survived a 10-inning nail-biter, 3-2. The teams play a second doubleheader Saturday at noon, at John L. Harvey field at WNC Carson City.

Western came out swinging in the opener with a first inning home run by Daniel Zylstra for a 1-1 tie. WNC took the lead when Zylstra scored on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Stiles. The 'cats broke it open in the fourth inning off a two-run double by Lance Ray and a three-run homer by Brian Barnett. Jordan Lewis was the winning pitcher.

The nightcap featured a pitching duel between the talented bullpens. WNC starter Josh Moody went five innings, and Kramer Champlin entered in relief, but ended up going the distance to the tenth inning.

Western jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on hits by Barnett and Mike Long, then was held scoreless until the bottom of the tenth, when a Stiles single high into center field brought home the winning score.

Western Nevada (23-3 conference, 29-9 overall) now leads the conference by four games.
