Cats Score 49 Runs

WNC Breaks Out the Bats at Reedley

Just in time for upcoming conference games, Western Nevada's Wildcats had a big offensive weekend, sweeping Reedley College in California by scores of 17-3, 19-1 and 13-0 on Friday and Saturday. The baseball team takes on College of Eastern Utah in Price this weekend to begin Scenic West Athletic Conference play.

In Friday's game, Lance Ray showed why he's the SWAC's most feared hitter, going 4-for-5 from the plate and providing six RBI. He leads the conference with a .457 batting average and an awesome .783 slugging percentage. He's also a threat on the base paths, with seven steals in seven attempts.

"We're starting to get healthy, that's important," Coach DJ Whittemore said today. "We're starting to play with some confidence, and that's important, too, but nothing we've done to this point makes any difference, we have to go out this weekend and play hard."

"I think this weekend was good for the hitters' confidence; certainly a good sign, but we're not going to waste time patting ourselves on the back," Whittemore said. "We have to get ready for Eastern Utah."

The winning pitcher Friday was Jake Waardenburg who gave up two unearned runs and two hits in four innings. He struck out three and walked one.

On Saturday, Eric Maupin was the hitting star with two homers, including a grand slam, and seven runs batted in. Western pitchers continued to do well. Kyle Starrat was one of four pitchers who combined for a four-hitter, and earned the victory.

In the second game, Travis Feiner provided the firepower as he was 4-for-4 with a three-run home run and a two-run double. He had seven RBIs for the day. Wildcat pitching was just as dominating in the nightcap, giving up just one hit. Jordan Lewis picked up the win with Javy Perez in relief. The Wildcats ended non-conference play at 12-12.
